How do you measure wellness? …happiness? …success? …attractiveness? …youthfulness? …nutritional balance? …adequate sleep?
I detect all of these things in one place. And, there are no letters or numbers involved. Not the letters or numbers following your name, the make/model of your car, the reading on your scale, or the current value of your stock portfolio. Just one measure. One attribute.

Sarah, add a cup of Greek yogurt to your first meal*, OK?” ~Candice Houston, IFBB Pro
*First meal: 1/2c oatmeal, 5 egg whites, 1T cacao nibs
Seemed an odd statement. Competition diets typically exclude dairy to avoid aggravating digestion or adding unnecessary calories with little bang for the buck. But, my trainer was notorious for the unconventional…crystals, meditation, gratitude lists…along with a boatload of squats and lunges. So, I asked, more out of curiosity than anything, why dairy?
Calcium deficiency. I can see it in your eyes. For most clients…and myself, I would suggest supplementing with Calcium, but you’re Scandinanvian so I’m guessing you digest dairy very easily.”
True, I do. I could live on dairy…
And, it’ll be easy to cut when we taper off the workouts and bring you in the week before Nationals. For now, though, I want the dairy in so you look healthy and vibrant by the time you get to stage.”
Healthy and vibrant. Detected in the eyes. Dullness is the telltale sign of a diet too harsh or a regime you’re not on board with at some level. The week before a show, I can be close to zero carbs…but if I’ve dieted properly and prepared spiritually, I keep the shiny eyes. I stay with S.E.S.
S.E.S. = Shining Eye Syndrome
The eyes are indeed the windows to the soul. When they are shining, you know life is going well in the soul-(all-)important areas.

Hey Sarah, welcome back.”
I walked in a few minutes late to Sh’bam…with one member hugging me and another ushering me to the front row. Had I just been gone a week? Feels good to be missed, I thought. And, it feels even better to be back dancing with my friends. Dance brings out shining eyes. I call it my moving meditation. It goes along with feeling lighter and more playful. Just because we’ve outgrown the jungle gym doesn’t mean we’ve outgrown the need for play. There is a time and place for everything. There ought to be at least.
Where I see the highest incidence of S.E.S. is among my flowers…my BodyFlow-ers. I notice it after we acknowledge each other in Namaste (“I bow to you”). The combination of mind-body movement and movement of breath in yoga and meditation have a profound effect on our gene behavior, says Deepak Chopra. Only five percent of genetic mutations are fully penetrant (meaning “have to happen”), which suggests we can prevent or even cure the other 95%. This is why Deepak is so passionate about promoting meditation on the global stage. And this is why I started a new 30-min meditation ritual. While my daughter naps, I set the timer to meditate.
Meditation…it only works if you do it.”
- Side effects of meditation: reverses biological markers of aging, up-regulates genes for healing, down-regulates genes for diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune disorders
- Rules of meditation: virtually none. Just no running to or from meditation!
- Note: the point of meditation is not to stop mental activity, it is to slow mental activity. No mental activity only happens when we are…no longer!
Our ability to feel gratitude in any given moment is truly the gift of wellness to ourselves. When we cultivate quiet and peace within ourselves, we feel gratitude more easily. Detected in our eyes. Our bright shiny eyes.
Who you are speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you’re saying.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
