Watching the Summer Olympics, I am fascinated by bodies and talents. The telltale physique of a chosen sport is uncanny, intriguing, awe-inspiring, and occasionally, even disturbing, but, that’s when I acknowledge: the difference between athletes and fitness models…
The best athletes have an irreverence toward their physique in favor of performance.
With a gold medal at stake, the question toward strength and nutrition should be, “What will help me win?” vs. “What will help me look best?”
Both athletes and fitness models use physical training and nutrition as their ingredients. The physique is the objective for the model and the side-effect for the athlete. One optimizes for the camera; the other optimizes for performance. The question is, which are you? I mean, honestly?
Put another way, would you be happy looking like you’ve never been in the gym in your life after winning your gym’s burpee contest? Or, would you be happy looking like you could grace the cover of a fitness magazine having never done a burpee? Both of these outcomes are entirely possible.
As a fitness competitor, I admired Giselle’s walk in Rio, her longest catwalk…her physique optimized for the media…while her husband, Tom Brady stayed in Foxboro…optimizing his physique for performance…eventual performance. Two different objectives. Two different physiques. They eat and train differently. As should you…depending on your objective.
Don’t give up, accept, or discredit your body for betraying you when in fact the problem is in reverse: your mindset has betrayed your body…with misaligned tactics and uninformed theories. When you know what you’re training for, your tactics can align more naturally with your desired outcome.
Here are the five most common tactical errors:
- All “healthy” food is good for my physique.
- Intense cardio is ideal for achieving a sculpted mid-section.
- Severely restricting calories is the best way to reduce body fat.
- Supplementation is a required component of a prize-winning physique.
- Fruits and/or nuts are an acceptable snack for someone interested in looking tight ‘n toned.
